“But most of all, I like to watch people. Sometimes I ride the subway
all day and look at them and listen to them. I just want to figure out
who they are and what they want and where they are going. Sometimes I
even go to Fun parks and ride in the jet cars when they race on the edge
of town at midnight and the police don't care as long as they're
insured. As long as everyone has ten thousand insurance everyone's
happy. Sometimes I sneak around and listen in subways. Or I listen at
soda fountains, and do you know what? People don't talk about anything... No, not anything. They name a lot of
cars or clothes or swimming pools mostly and say how swell! But they
all say the same things and nobody says anything different from anyone
else.”
“How do you get so empty? Who takes it out of you?”
-Ray Bradbury
uhm wow and yes and i agree.
ReplyDeletei think that's something that irks me to no extreme with people right now. it's like you can't hardly get past the conversations full of nothing-ness. and every where you go it's empty and each group has their own empty topics that they think are the bomb-diggety and i'm just thinking, really guys?
and to answer mr. ray bradbury: i think it's fear. i think it's people's way of keeping their life 'their's and not having to expose their hurts and fears and passions because of what others may think and somewhere along the line it just became normal to talk about nothingness and in the end we all became empty.
Natalia! Yes! I've been thinking about this recently. About why I don't share my real opinions, why I never speak about what I really think or feel. Why I don't write about what's at my core.
DeleteAnd then I realized it's because I'm afraid of people taking it and shredding it to bits. I don't think I really want to deal with that. It's a shame that we can't all be a bit more respectful.
And also! haha on the show Call the Midwife, one of the characters said, "I've decided there are only two reasons that people do anything: Love or fear." And how true is that?? Just boom. Head explosion.
DeleteAnd sometimes when we voice opinions outloud fearing what people will think we tend to analyze it ourselves way too much and in the end sometimes we don't even like our own opinions because they may be inferior. Do you like that show? I've heard of it but never got around to watching it. But woah that's so true. Haha precisely, head explosion. But in a good way.
DeleteOh, I do that exact thing! "This person is probably going to analyze what I'm about to say, so I should probably analyze it first." And, yes, I LOVE that show. It's incredible.
DeleteI love how much your posts always make me think. it's like they drill a hole in my head that lets all of these thoughts spill out after being stuck for so long. Yes. Yes.

Well thank you! I'm glad to serve as your...head drill. I'm reminded of Izzie Stevens haha. I hope you understand why or this will make no sense. Obviously I love your posts as well!
DeleteOh my lord. Just saw this reply. Izzie Stevens reference. Get out of here. I will always get that reference. You're perfect. Yes.
DeleteI always stare at strangers, and try and figure them out! It's so interesting.
ReplyDeletei like people watching and sometimes even interacting with people..
ReplyDeletebut sometimes i feel like i could live in the mountains, all alone, in a snug little cabin by a river (not lake, because lakes are scary), and never have to deal with people again. and be the happiest person alive. ;)
i love that quote from CTM, epicness, that. ^_^
That's true, lakes are kind of scary. I have trouble trusting deep water. I would say we should go do that cabin thing together, but I think that might defeat the whole purpose!
Deletemy word, this is kind of perfect. you start reading it imagining a different ending, but the ending is so real, but you wish it was different. i agree with Emma. your posts always make me think.
ReplyDeleteIt's from Fahrenheit 451. I think I'm gonna read it next because, like you said, this quote is so true. Kind of disturbing. It was written in the 50's.
DeleteThis is so sad and true... but maybe people have better things to say in more intimate situations? Or maybe he's just not been to any bars in England past 10pm lol
ReplyDeleteReally beautiful, as always xx
hahaha! Valid point, Charlotte. Valid.
Deletelove the pic! ^^

i adore ray bradbury, and this book.
ReplyDeleteand while i think this is true, i don't think it's because people have nothing to say. or because they're happy with the banal conversations. i think more of us than we know are listening. are hoping something meaningful breaks through and changes the conversation, makes it real. changes us.
i think natalia's right, that fear is what's stopping us all. i've had some of the best conversations of my life with vagrants and homeless people while travelling. because they're not afraid of giving themselves to you. they don't have a lot to lose so they just say what they think. sometimes insane, sometimes crass, but often beautiful and kind things.
i think if we all felt that kind of freedom and trust in each other, the dialogue would change. but it's hard to be the one to start....
and so we write. ha.
And so we write! I love that so much.
ReplyDeleteLove this so so so much!
ReplyDeleteps. beautiful picture!
